Rashaan Salaam is an American former professional football player. He’s 6-foot-1 and plays the running back position. He was the recipient of the 1994 Heisman Trophy. Salam was born on October 8, 1974, to parents Harada and Sultan in San Diego, California. His father played running back for the Cincinnati Bengals. Salam attended La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego. He continued his education at the University of Colorado.

Salam started playing eight-a-side football at La Jolla Country Day School. He received All-American honors in high school and was later inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame. Salam played four seasons of college football at the University of Colorado (1992-94). As a junior, he rushed for 2,055 yards, 24 touchdowns and led the Colorado Buffaloes to an 11-1 record. Salam won the Heisman Trophy in 1994, Colorado’s first. He also won the Doc Walker Award and was unanimously named to the All-American First Team.

Salam was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 21st overall pick in the 1995 NFL draft. He rushed for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie season. He was eliminated by the Bears in 1997 due to injuries and marijuana abuse. Salam played two games for the Cleveland Browns in 1999. He played briefly with the XFL’s Memphis Fever (2001) and later the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts (2004).

Rashaan Salaam passed away on December 5, 2016 at the age of 42. His cause of death was reportedly a shooting suicide. He was found dead at Eben G. Fine Park in Boulder, Colorado. Salaam’s parents and siblings Jubali Alaji and Atiya Henry survived.
