Rachel Maddow is an American liberal political commentator, television host and broadcaster. She is best known for hosting “The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC. She became the first openly gay anchor in American history to host a major prime-time news show. Maddow was born on April 1, 1973 in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert, is a lawyer and her mother, Elaine, is a school administrator. She has an older brother named David. Maddow attended Castro Valley High School, where she competed in swimming, basketball and volleyball. She holds a BA in Public Policy from Stanford University (1994) and a PhD in Political Science from Oxford University (2001).

Maddow found her first radio hosting job at WRNX Radio in 1999. There, she co-hosted “The Dave in the Morning Show” with Dave Brinnel. Her next radio gig was on WRSI Radio in Northampton, Massachusetts. Maddow joined American Airlines in 2004 as co-host of the morning show Unfiltered. The show was canceled in early 2005. Maddow hosted her own weekday radio show “The Rachel Maddow Show” from April 2005 to January 2010. The show features news, commentary and interviews.
Maddow contributed as a panelist on the MSNBC TV show Tucker (2005-08). She became the station’s political analyst in January 2008. Her own news/opinion show “The Rachel Maddow Show” premiered on September 8, 2008. The show’s successful launch has since boosted ratings on MSNBC. It has won several accolades, including 2 News and Documentary Emmys and the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Television Journalism. Maddow received the Walter Cronkite Faith and Freedom Award in 2010. She is also the recipient of the John Steinbeck Award and the Gracie Allen Award.
Maddow’s first book, Drift: The Dismantling of American Military Power, was published in 2012. It was number one on the New York Times bestseller list. This book examines U.S. military policy from the Vietnam War to Afghanistan.
