Prodigy is an American rapper and member of the rap duo Mobb Deep. He is known for hits like “Quiet Storm” and “Shook Ones.” His recordings include The Infamous (1995), Murda Muzik (1999) and his solo debut HNIC (2000). Prodigy was born Albert Johnson on November 2, 1974, in Hempstead, New York. He grew up in Queens, New York. His grandfather Bud Johnson and his uncle Keg Johnson were both musicians.

Prodigy and music producer Havoc formed hip-hop duo “Mobb Deep” in 1992. Their debut studio album, Juvenile Hell, was released in April 1993 by 4th & B’way Records. It was led by the singles “Peer Pressure” and “Hit It from the Back”. The duo’s second album, Notorious, was released by Loud Records in April 1995. It features tracks like “Survival of the Fittest,” “Rising Temperatures,” and “Shook Ones Pt.” Two”. The album featured guest appearances by Q-Tip, Nas, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah. Mobb Deep released a total of 8 studio albums, including Hell on Earth (1996), Murda Muzik (1999) and Infamy (2001) Their eighth and final album, The Infamous Mobb Deep, was released in 2014. They sold over 3 million records throughout their career.
Prodigy has released 4 albums and 17 singles as a solo artist. His solo studio debut HNIC was released in November 2000 by Relativity Records. It peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album features guest singers from NORE, BG and Cormega. His second album, HNIC Pt. 2, issued in 2003. Prodigy’s last 3 albums HNIC 3 (2012), The Bumpy Johnson Album (2012) and Hegelian Dialectic (2017) were released by Infamous Records. He has collaborated on two projects with The Alchemist, Mac Return of the Mac (2007) and Albert Einstein (2013). He appeared on Troy Ave’s single “New York City” and 50 Cent’s track “Chase the Paper”.
In 2008, Prodigy was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison for gun possession. During this time, he wrote his autobiography, My Notorious Life, which was released in 2011. His other publications include HNIC: A Novel of Notorious (2013) and Ritual (2015). He co-authored the cookbook, Commissary Kitchen: My Notorious Prison Cookbook (2016), with journalist Kathy Iandoli. Prodigy appeared in the films Full Clip (2006), Blackout (2007) and Rhyme and Punishment (2011).
