Preet Bharara is an Indian-American attorney and former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. Known as the “Crusader Prosecutor,” he was known for handling high-profile cases involving diplomats and foreign officials. Preetinder Singh Bharara was born to Indian parents on October 13, 1968 in Ferozepur, India. He has a younger brother named Vinette. His family immigrated to the United States, and he grew up in New Jersey. Bharara attended the Laney School in Tinton Falls, NJ. He received a BA in government from Harvard University (1990) and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School (1993).

Bharara began his legal career in 1993 as a Litigation Assistant with the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. From 1996 to 2000 he worked at the law firm “Swidler Berlin Shereff Friedman”. Bharara was named assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District. New York in 2000. He was hired by then attorney Mary Jo White. During his tenure, he prosecuted everything from organized crime to drug trafficking.
Bharara served as chief advisor to Senator Chuck Schumer and chief of staff for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. He led the committee’s investigation into the firing of several U.S. attorneys in 2006. Bharara was nominated by President Barack Obama to be the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in May 2009. His nomination was unanimously approved and he was sworn in on August 13, 2009. During his tenure, he oversaw more than 200 associate attorney terrorism and public corruption cases. He was fired on March 11, 2017, after refusing to step down. On March 10, 2017, the 84th Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a resignation order.
