Portia Lee James DeGeneres, whose professional name is Portia de Rossi, was born on January 31, 1973 in Horsham, Victoria, Australia, Amanda Lee Rogers (Amanda Lee Rogers). Her mother Margaret (Margaret) is a medical receptionist. Her father, Barry Rogers, unfortunately passed away when she was nine years old. De Rossi grew up in Grovedale, Victoria, and as a child often modeled for various print and TV commercials. When she was fifteen, she adopted the professional name Portia De Rossi, inspired by Portia in William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice”. She studied at Geelong Grammar School and later studied law at the University of Melbourne.

De Rossi made her first major screen acting role in 1994, playing a young model in the Australian film “The Siren” (1994). Soon after, she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she began to play guest roles in various TV shows. A permanent role in the sitcom “Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher” helped her gain a wider audience, and eventually got a role in the movie “Scream 2” (1997). From there, De Rossi continued to be the main actor on the show “Ally McBeal” in 1998. Her role as a lawyer Nelle Porter helped her gain more international attention, and she remained on the show until it ended in 2002.
De Rossi went on to star in the movie “Who is Clement Stuart?” (2001) with Christian Slater, Rupaul and Tim Allen. Then, from 2003 to 2006, she played the role of Lindsay Bluth Fünke in the Fox TV show “Development Blocked”. Later, she will replay this role in the 2013 Netflix revival show, and play this role again from 2018 to 2019. She joined the cast of “Scandal” in the fourth season of the show, playing the recurring role of Elizabeth North, and was promoted to the regular episode of the show. The fifth season of the show, before the sixth season was eliminated. She also appeared in “Nip/Tuck” and other shows, played Julia McNamara’s girlfriend Olivia Rhodes in the fifth season of the show; played the role of ABC show “Better Off Ted” (2009 – 2010) Veronica Palmer; and several episodes, such as “Mr. Sterling” (2003), “Robin Alley” (2012), “Sean Saves the World” (2014), “San Clarita Diet” (2017) and “Family Portrait” (2017).
She has starred in films including the TV movie “American Prince: The Story of John F. Kennedy Jr.” (2003), in which she played JFK’s wife Caroline Bessett-Kennedy; “We call it a day’s night” ( 2003), in which she played an Australian journalist; in the thriller “The Curse” (2005), in which she played a fortune teller; and in the movie “Now with Honey” (2015). In May 2018, De Rossi announced her withdrawal from her wife’s show “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”. She has said that the only exception after her retirement is to work in the future “blocked” season. In addition to acting, she also published her autobiography “Unbearable Lightness: Stories of Gains and Losses” (2010), in which she discussed her medical struggles and struggles with eating disorders.

De Rossi has been selected as Stuff’s “100 Sexiest Women”, Femme Fatales’ “Sexiest Women”, Maxim’s “100 Sexiest Women” and “People” Magazine’s “100 Most Beautiful Women”. In 1999, she also won the Screen Actors Guild Award for the ensemble actor of “Ally McBeal”, and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for “Development Blocked” several times, and actually won the Golden Satellite Award for Best Actress prize. With her work in “Hindered Development” in 2005, her performance in comedy or musical series. She also won the Future Classic Award at the TV Land Awards in 2004, and she shared the award with other “blocked” actors Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, Alia Shawkat and Michael Cera.
Personal life and philanthropy
De Rossi was married to film producer Melmetkaff from 1996 to 1999. She explained that even though she knew it would not work for her, part of the reason for maintaining the relationship was that she was afraid of being exposed as a lesbian, especially as a young actress. She did not comment publicly on her sexual orientation at the time. But from 2001 to 2004 dated Italian-American director Francesca Gregorini (stepdaughter of Ringo Starr). Then, after meeting backstage at the awards ceremony, De Rossi began dating Alan DeGeneres in 2004. Soon after, in 2005, she talked publicly about her sexual orientation and sexual orientation for the first time in a media interview. DeGeneres proposed in 2008 and held an intimate wedding at his home in Beverly Hills in August of the same year. Only 17 guests and their mother attended the wedding. She legally changed her name to Portia Lee James DeGeneres in August 2010 and obtained US citizenship in September 2011.
De Rossi supports various charitable organizations and undertakings, including Locks of Love, which provides human hair wigs for children with diseases that cause hair loss; FXB International, an AIDS relief organization in Africa; and The Art of Elysium, one for terminally ill patients Art Foundation that provides services to children. She also supports many animal-related causes, including Alley Cat Allies, an organization focused on cats; and The Gentle Barn, a shelter for abused animals in California.
