Ellis is a right-handed pitcher and a conversion hitter. He attended Gardena High School and Los Angeles Harbor College.
Ellis made his Major League Baseball debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1968 and played for the team until 1975. He then played for the New York Yankees from 1976 to 1977, the Oakland Athletics in 1977, the Texas Rangers from 1977 to 1979, and the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates in 1979. During his MLB career, Ellis won the World Series with the Buccaneers in 1971. He was also named to the All-Star team in 1971. In 1976, Ellis was named the American League’s Comeback Player of the Year. In June 1970, he threw a no-hitter and later claimed he was affected by LSD in the game. He later admitted to having a substance abuse problem and never pitched without using a drug. Ellis is also known for being outspoken and supportive of African Americans. After treatment, he counseled drug addicts in prisons and treatment centers. Dock Ellis died of liver disease on December 19, 2008 at the age of 63.
