Phylicia Rashad is probably best known for her role as Clair Huxtable in the popular NBC sitcom “The Cosby Show”. Early life and career start
Phylicia Rashad, originally named Phylicia Ayers-Allen, was born in Houston, Texas in 1948. Her father Andrew was an orthodontist, and her mother Vivienne was a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet, artist, playwright and scholar. Rashard has three siblings: the jazz musician brother Turks, the actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, and the real estate banker Hugh. After growing up, the family moved to Mexico, which allowed Rashad to speak fluent Spanish. When she was in college, she attended Howard University and graduated with honors in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree.
After the release of the disco concept album “Josephine Superstar” in 1978, Rashad was recognized for his Broadway stage work in the 1980s. In her early works, she played Deena Jones in “Dreamgirls” as a substitute for Sheryl Lee Ralph, and was a kid in “The Wiz” for nearly four years.
Drama success
Rashard continued to rise to fame on stage, appearing in Broadway’s Tracy Leitz’s “August: Osage County”, Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Forest” and George C. Wolfe’s” “The Last Jam of Jelly”. In 2004, she starred in the revival version of “Raisins in the Sun”, which ushered in a new career peak. As Lena Younger, Rashad became the first black actress to win the Tony Award for Best Dramatic Actress. The following year, she was nominated for the same award for her performance in August Wilson’s “Gems of the Sea”.
Rashard’s other Broadway works include Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, co-starring James Earl Jones and Anika Noni Ross, and Melvin Van Peebble Sri Lanka’s “should not die naturally.” Rashad also starred in many off-Broadway works, including “Bernada Alba”, “Cimbelin” and “Duplex” at Lincoln Center; “Helen” and “Everyone’s Ruby” at the Public Theater; and “The Ruby for Everyone” at the Manhattan Theatre Club “Sirens”; and several works in collaboration with the black ensemble company, such as “Puppet Show”, “Cry for Me” and “In the Northern Motel.” In addition, Rashad has performed regional dramas in places such as the Union Theater in Atlanta and the Arena Stage in Washington, DC.

Theater director
In 2007, Rashad tried to direct the “Gems of the Sea” produced by the Seattle Repertory Company. Later, in 2014, she directed the revival of August Wilson’s Fences at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey. Rashard continued to focus on August Wilson’s work in 2016, when she directed the playwright’s “Mar Rennie’s Black Background” at the Mark Tapper Forum in Los Angeles.
TV career
After playing a regular role in the ABC soap opera “One Life to Live”, Rashad got her star TV role in the NBC sitcom “The Cosby Show” in 1984. The actress plays the lawyer Clair Huxtable, she is the wife of Cliff Huxtable, an obstetrician played by Bill Cosby, and the mother of five children. The program lasted until 1992 and won two Emmy nominations for Rashad. During this period, Rashad appeared in the TV movies “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, “False Witness”, “Polly” and “Prison Bird”. She also played Claire Hextable in four episodes of the sitcom “Another World”.
In 1996, Bill Cosby returned to television with the CBS sitcom “Cosby”; the actor called Rashad to play the role of his wife Ruth Lucas. The show lasted until 2000. Later, Rashad appeared in one episode of “Everyone Hates Chris” and three episodes of the detective series “Psychology”. In 2008, she replayed her Tony Award-winning character Lena Younger in a TV movie adapted from “Raisins in the Sun”. Film career
On the big screen, Rashad made his first appearance in the 1996 costume drama “Once Upon a Time…When We Have Colors”. It was followed by the 1999 comedy “Loving Jezebel”. In 2010, Rashad starred in three movies: the romantic comedy “Just Wright” with Queen Latifah and Common; Halle Berry TV series “Frankie and Alice”; and Taylor Perry’s “Girls of Color” “The play is starring Janet Jackson, Kerry Washington, Ubi Goldberg and Anika Noni Ross. Rashad again collaborated with Perry in 2012 to film his romantic drama “Good Deeds.” Later film works include “The Gods Behaving Badly”, and the sports drama “Creed” and its sequel “Creed II”. In 2020, Rashad appeared in Tyler Perry’s “Fall of Grace”, the horror film “Black Box”, Netflix’s fantasy musical “The Sound of Jingle: A Christmas Journey” and Disney/Pixar’s “Soul” (Soul).

Rashad has been married three times. The first marriage was in 1972 with the dentist William Lancelot Bowles Jr. (William Lancelot Bowles Jr.). The couple had a son and divorced in 1975. Next, in 1978, Rashad married Victor Willis, the original lead singer of the village people. They divorced in 1982. In 1985, Rashad married Ahmed Rashad, a former NFL drama and sports host, and she adopted his surname. He proposed to her in the pre-match show of a Thanksgiving football match on live TV. The next year, they had a daughter, Condoola. The two eventually divorced in 2001.
