What is Pernell Whitaker’s net worth?
Pernell Whitaker was a retired professional boxer and professional boxing coach who at the time of his death had a net worth of $250,000. Known by his fans as “Sweet Pea,” Whitaker established himself as a defensive guru during his successful boxing career. While Whittaker made millions as a professional athlete, he later ran into considerable financial problems. His career lasted from 1984 to 2001. After retiring from boxing, he became a boxing coach.
In the ring, Pernell has won four heavyweight titles, including lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and middleweight. He was once the undisputed featherweight champion and also holds direct featherweight and welterweight titles. In 1989 he won the Boxer of the Year award and he is now considered one of the top 10 fighters of the past 80 years. No one else has had a longer reign as a unified lightweight title. In 2006, Whitaker was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2019, he died in a pedestrian traffic accident.

Pernell Whitaker Sr. was born on January 2, 1964 in Norfolk, Virginia. Whitaker grew up with two siblings and began boxing at the age of nine. He then built an impressive amateur career, playing in 214 races and winning 201. 91 of those victories came from knockout rounds. He later claimed that he played about 500 amateur games before turning pro. Angel Herrera Vera had an early defeat at the 1982 World Championships, but he has since beat that opponent four times. Pernell then ended his amateur career by defeating Luis Ortiz to win the Olympic gold in 1984.
Profession
Shortly after turning pro, Whitaker beat former world champion Alfredo Ryan. He then went on to defeat Roger Mayweather, who at the time held the super featherweight and WBC light welterweight title. In 1988, he challenged José Luis Ramírez for the WBC lightweight title, but lost for the first time in a highly controversial split decision. The fight was later considered a “disgrace” by many boxing experts – the worst in the history of the sport.
However, Pernell continued to impress, winning the IBF lightweight title against Greg Haugen in 1989. Haugen had never been knocked down before. Throughout the ’90s, Whittaker defeated a slew of title challengers, beating fighters like Freddie Pendleton, Azuma Nelson and Juan Nazario. After defeating the latter, Whitaker became the first undisputed lightweight champion since Roberto Duran. During this time, he also beat Jorge Paez and Poli Diaz.
In 1992, Pernell decided to advance to the heavyweight division, fighting and defeating light welterweight champion Rafael Pineda. He then advanced again, beating Buddy McGirt for the straight line and WBC welterweight title. This prepared Whitaker to take on Julio César Chávez, widely regarded as the best boxer in the world at the time. Like his previous match against Jose Luis Ramirez, the match ended in considerable controversy as the judges called it a majority draw. Various media sources are convinced this is Whitaker’s victory.

After a successful rematch with McGirt, Whitaker returned to the ring in 1995 to fight Julio César Vásquez. Despite being knocked out in the first few rounds, Pernell easily won and won the super welterweight title. That gave him four titles in four different weight classes that only four other fighters have ever won. Whitaker then returned to welterweight, defeating Gary Jacobs late in the fight to defend his WBC belt. He then attempted to repeat the feat against Oscar De La Hoya, but was ultimately thwarted by his opponent, who won a controversial unanimous decision.
Unfortunately, Whitaker’s situation took a turn for the worse as he failed a drug test after his next fight, denying him the victory. Then he lost again to Felix Trinidad in 1999. This led to his final fight with Carlos Bojorquez. Pernell finished on a low note, breaking his collarbone in the fourth round and was forced out of the race. At this point, he was behind on the scorecard. After the game, Whitaker officially announced his retirement from the sport. He then went on to train various fighters including Dorin Spivey, Joel Julio, Calvin Brock and Zab Judah.

In 2002, Whitaker was convicted of cocaine possession. He violated the terms of a previous prison sentence by overdosing on cocaine earlier that year.

In 2014, Whitaker reportedly succeeded in deporting his mother after a protracted court battle. He reportedly needed to sell the house where his mother lived due to financial problems. When he bought the Virginia home in 1984, he gave it to his mother nearly 30 years ago. At the time of the 2014 report, the house was reported to be worth $400,000. He plans to sell the home for $150,000 in equity, which he will then use to repay $18,000 in unpaid taxes on the building.
