He is best known as a member of the heavy metal bands Down and Corrosion of Conformity. He was a member of the local band Graveyard Rodeo when he befriended the Corrosion of Conformity.
He joined the band in 1989 and played rhythm guitar on their third album, Blind. After two members left the band, Keenan took over lead vocals and guitar. He was part of the band and produced four other studio albums and one live album. The band took a hiatus from 2006 to 2010 and reunited without Keenan. Pepper formed the band Down in 1991, and the band released their debut album NOLA in 1995. They took a hiatus in 1996, but re-released their second album Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow in 2002. They had another hiatus with III: Over the Under 2007 before releasing Down. Their fourth album was released in 2012. Keenan worked with Metallica, played guitar and sang a cover of “Tuesday’s Gone” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Pepper auditioned to be Metallica’s bassist, but was defeated by Robert Trujillo.
