Born in Dubnica nad Vahom, Czechoslovakia in 1974, Pavol Demitra played overseas before being selected by the Ottawa Senators in the 1993 NHL draft. In late 1996, Demetrius was traded to St. Louis.
Louis Bruce, who appeared in three NHL All-Star games in 1999, 2000 and 2000 and won the Mrs. Bing Memorial Trophy in 2000. Dmitra is fifth in the Blues’ all-time scoring list with 2,014 goals and 493 points in nearly 500 appearances. He played overseas during the NHL lockout before reaching a free agency deal with the Los Angeles Kings. Shortly after, Demetria was traded to the Minnesota Wild and then signed with the Vancouver Canucks. He played two seasons in Vancouver before deciding to play in the Continental Hockey League with Lokomotiv. Before joining the Slovakian team, Dmitra played for the Czechoslovakia men’s national team, winning several medals. He has appeared in three different Olympics. Dmitra died on September 7, 2011, when the plane carrying the Lokomotiv team and coaches for the season opener crashed after takeoff on the banks of the Volga River outside Yaroslavl, Russia. All 44 people on board were killed. He leaves behind his wife Maya and two children. Maya was pregnant with the couple’s third child at the time of her husband’s death.
