Paul Manafort is an American lawyer, political consultant and lobbyist. He served as campaign manager for Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Before that, he was a consultant to George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Bob Dole, and Ronald Reagan. He also lobbied controversial foreign leaders such as Victor Yanukovych, Ferdinand Marcos and Mobutu Sese Seko. Manafort was convicted of bank and tax fraud in 2018. He was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison in March 2019.
Paul John Manafort Jr. was born on April 1, 1949 in New Britain, Connecticut. His parents are Paul J. Manafort, Sr. (d. 2013) and Antoinette Marie (d. 2003). He has two brothers Robert (d.) and Dennis. Manafort attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration (1971) from Georgetown University and his Juris Doctor (1974) from Georgetown University School of Law.

Manafort started practicing law shortly after graduating from law school. From 1977 to 1980, he worked for Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease in Washington, DC. The firm specializes in the areas of litigation, intellectual property, corporate law, and labor and employment law. In 1980, Manafort co-founded the lobbying firm Black, Manafort & Stone with Charles R. Black Jr. and Roger J. Stone. In 1984, the company changed its name to Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly (BSMK) with the addition of Peter G. Kelly. Manafort quit BSMK in 1996. Together with Richard he founded a new company Davis, Manafort, and Freedman H. Davis and Matthew C. Freeman. During his tenure, Manafort lobbied controversial foreign leaders such as Victor Yanukovych, Ferdinand Marcos, Mobutu Sese Seko and Jonas Savimbi. He was criticized in the 1989 HUD scandal for using his ties to HUD to embezzle millions of dollars to fix a low-income apartment complex in Seabrook, New Jersey.
Manafort worked with President Gerald Ford in the mid-1970s as the Delegate Search Coordinator. From 1978 to 1980, he served as the Southern Coordinator for Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign. In 1981, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of Overseas Private Investment Corporation. Manafort served as an adviser to George HW Bush during the 1988 presidential campaign. He also advised Bob Dole during the 1996 campaign. Manafort joined Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in March 2016 as his conference manager. He succeeded Corey Lewandowski as campaign manager starting in June 2016. His relationship with former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych drew media attention in August 2016. Manafort resigned as a result. Kellyanne Conway takes over as new campaign manager and Steve Bannon is named campaign CEO.
The FBI opened a criminal investigation into Manafort in 2014. This came shortly after Viktor Yanukovych’s dismissal. He was also named in connection with the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Manafort was also investigated by the CIA, NSA, FinCEN and DNI. It was confirmed that he had been wiretapped by the FBI starting in 2014, around the time of the 2016 presidential election. Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates were indicted by Robert Mueller’s prosecutors in October 2017. He was convicted of tax/bank fraud in 2018 and sentenced to 7.5 years in prison in March 2019.
