Paul Kantner is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and co-founder of Jefferson Airplane. He was born on March 17, 1941 in San Francisco, California. He attended a Catholic military boarding school as a child. He attended Santa Clara University and then San Jose State College, but dropped out to pursue music. He was influenced by the work of folk singer Pete Seeger.

In 1965, Cantner co-founded the rock band Jefferson Airplane with singer Marty Baring. He played rhythm guitar, provided vocals, and wrote many of the band’s early songs. The band’s debut album “Jefferson Airplane Takes Off” was released in 1966 by RCA Victor. After several core members left the band, the band changed its name to “Jefferson Starship” in the 1970s.
