Patty Duke is an Oscar-winning American actress and mental health activist. She was born Annemarie Duke on December 14, 1946, in Elmhurst, New York. Her mother, Francis, has bipolar disorder, and her father, John Bullock, is an alcoholic. She has two siblings, Raymond and Carol. Duke’s name was changed from “Anne Marie” to “Patty” by her guardians John and Ethel Rose. She attends the Young Professionals School in Quintano.

Duke started advertising and then landed widgets on TV. Her first screen appearance was on the 1950s soap opera Bright Day. Her breakthrough role was “Helen Keller” in the 1959-1961 Broadway play “Wonder Workers.” She reprised the role in the 1962 film adaptation, which won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was 16 then.
In 1962, Duke became the star of her own sitcom, The Patty Duke Show. The series ran for three seasons on ABC from 1963 to 1966. She later played “Nelly O’Hara” in the 1967 drama “Doll’s Hollow.” Duke followed, playing “Natalie Miller” in the 1969 comedy “I, Natalie.” She won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. She won her second Emmy for the 1977 miniseries “Captain and the King.” Duke served as the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1985 to 1988. After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1982, she became a mental health advocate.
