Pat Summitt is an American college basketball coach with the most wins in NCAA basketball history. She coached the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team for 38 years and won eight NCAA championships in the process. Summit was born Patricia Sue Hyde on June 14, 1952, in Clarksville, Tennessee. Her parents are Richard and Hazel, and she has four siblings, Tommy, Charles, Kenneth and Linda.

Summit attended Chatham County High School and then the University of Tennessee at Martin. She received her bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1974 and her master’s degree in 1975. Summitt won a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics as a member of the U.S. women’s national basketball team. She began her coaching career at the University of Tennessee in 1974 and held that position until the end of the 2011-12 season. Her record is 1,098-208, which translates to an 84.1 percent win rate. Summitt coached the Lady Vols to eight NCAA division titles. She has been named the SEC Coach of the Year 8 times and the NCAA Coach of the Year 7 times.
Summit also served as the head coach of the U.S. women’s basketball team. She led the team to a gold medal at the 1979 FIBA World Championship and a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. The team also won the William Jones Cup in 1979 and 1984. In 2000, Summit was named the Naismith Women’s Coach of the Century and inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2012, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
