Pat Sajak, a Chicago native, is an American game show host and TV personality. As the long-time host of the TV game show “Wheel of Fortune”, he became a household name. Sajak is also a talk show host and former weatherman. His screen works include “Just Off the Ship”, “The Queen of the Kings”, “Team A”, “Our Days”, “Small Thugs” and “The Larry Sanders Show”. His own TV show “The Pat Sajak Show” lasted from 1989 to 1990. In 1987, Sajak won the People’s Choice Award for his favorite game show host. His star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.
Sajak was born Patrick Leonard Sajdak on October 26, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois. He has a brother David and a half brother William. His late father Leonard Anthony Sajak was a factory worker. After Leonard’s death, his mother Joyce Helen married Walter Buckle. Sajak attended Farragut High School, followed by Columbia College in Chicago. He worked at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel during college. Before television, Sajak served in the US Army (1968-72). During the Vietnam War, he served as a radio DJ for the armed forces radio.

Sajak started his career in his hometown of Chicago. His first official performance was as a news reporter for the local Spanish radio station “WEDC”. During his tenure, his task was to read the news broadcast every hour for 5 minutes from midnight to 6:00 in the morning. After returning to the army in 1972, Sajak got a job as a disc jockey on a radio station in Murray, Kentucky. He held a performance for a year. He later worked as a DJ on the “WSM” radio station in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1977, Sajak was recruited by “KNBC-TV” in Los Angeles, California. He was hired as a full-time weatherman.
In 1980, Sajak hosted pilot episodes of the game shows “Press Your Luck” and “Puzzlers.” The following year, he was hired by Merv Griffin to host the “Wheel of Fortune”. The first host of the Wheel of Fortune was Chuck Woolery. Chuck hosted the game show from 1975 to 1981. Sajak made his debut as a Wheel host on December 28, 1981. Since then he won 3 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host Award (1993, 1997, 1998). The 2018-19 season marked his 38th year hosting the show. This earned him the Guinness World Record and became the longest-running host of all game shows.
In addition to “Wheel of Fortune”, Sajak also hosted or co-hosted several other TV shows. Most notably, he hosted the Pat Sajak Show (1989-90) and Pat Sajak Weekend (2003). He has served as a guest host for “Larry King Live” and “Live with Regis and Kelly”. He has appeared in the game show Super Password (1984-88) many times. Sajak played a small role as a news announcer in Ken Finkleman’s film Airplane II: The Sequel (1982). Later, he played “Kevin Hathaway” in the 1983 episode of “Our Life”. His television works also include Rugrats, The King of Queens, A-Team and The Commish.
