early life
She was born in Green Point, Brooklyn, New York City on January 10, 1953, her original name is Patricia Mae Andrzejewski. Her mother Mildred is a beautician, and her father Andrew is a sheet metal worker. The family moved to Lindenhurst, a village in Babylon, Long Island, New York. At the age of eight, Benatar sang her first solo song “It Must Be Spring” at Daniel Street Elementary School. She showed an interest in drama and started vocal lessons very early.
Years later, she flaunted her 4.5 octave voice in the musical theatre department of Lindenhurst High School, where she participated in the school’s production. She originally planned to go to the Juilliard School of Music, but finally decided to study health education at Stony Brook University. However, after only one year at Stony Brook, Pat married her high school lover Dennis T. Benatar, which surprised everyone. Dennis T. Benatar was a soldier and she was with him. He moved to Virginia, where he is stationed. She then worked as a bank teller in Richmond, Virginia since 1973.

Soon after, Pat got tired of the boring life of housewives and bank clerks, quit his concert job at the Holiday Inn, and found a job as a singing waitress in a nightclub called The Roaring Twenties. It was there that she met and formed a duet with pianist Phil Coxon, which soon expanded to a ten-member casual band called Coxon’s Army.
The band became more and more popular, and after Dennis retired, the couple moved to New York City in May 1975, and Benatar continued her solo career.
