Papa Wemba is a Congolese musician best known for his work in the Soukous genre. Known as the “King of Rumba”, he is considered a Congolese icon and a world music star. He was born Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba on June 14, 1949 in Kasai, Congo, Belgium.
Profession
Wemba started his musical career singing in various religious choirs. He joined the band “Zaiko Langa Langa” in 1969 and worked with musicians Nyoka Longo Jossart, Bimi Ombale and others. The band rose to fame in 1973 with popular songs such as “Chouchouna”, “Eluzam” and “Mbeya Mbeya”. Wemba is also a member of the bands Isifi Lokole and Yoka Lokole. In 1977 he founded the popular band “Viva Music”. The group has since grown into a world music group with success in Europe, America, Asia and Africa. Wemba moved to Paris in the 1980s and worked with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder. He also starred in films such as Life Is Beautiful (1987) and Wild Games (1997).
Wemba was arrested at his Paris home in February 2003. He is suspected of smuggling illegal immigrants from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Europe in his band. He was found guilty and sentenced to three and a half months in prison and a fine. He was convicted of similar crimes in a Belgian court in 2012.

Papa Wemba passed away on April 23, 2016 at the age of 66. He had a seizure and collapsed on stage while performing at the Côte d’Ivoire city music festival. He died soon after. Wemba is married to “Mary Rose”. He has six children.
