Otto Perez Molina was born on December 1, 1950 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Molina has been President of Guatemala since January 14, 2012. As the Patriotic Party candidate, he lost the earlier presidential election (2007) but won the 2011 presidential election.
In the 1990s, before entering politics, he served as Director of Military Intelligence, Chief of Staff to President Ramiro de Leon Carpio, and Chief Military Representative for the Guatemalan Peace Accords. During his presidency so far, he has made controversial calls to legalize drugs. During his time in the Guatemalan army, he served in the notoriously brutal Special Forces (known as the Cabelas) (he served as Director of Military Intelligence and Inspector General of the Army). In the November 2003 general elections, the Patriotic Party allied with two other parties in the Grand National Alliance. Molina is the first former military officer since Guatemala returned to democratic elections in 1986. The debate followed Molina. On November 11, 2000, his son Otto Pérez Leal was attacked by gunmen while driving with his wife and young daughter. On February 21, 2001, three days before Molina planned to form a new party, masked gunmen attacked and wounded his daughter Lisette.
