Otis Clay is an American R&B singer and a member of the Blues Hall of Fame. He was born on February 11, 1942 in the rural community of Waxhaw, Mississippi. He moved with his family to Muncie, Indiana when he was eleven.
Profession
Clay started out as a gospel singer for the local band “The Voice of Hope” and then “Christian Traveler”. He signed up to One-derful! Recorded in 1965 and recorded his first hit single “That’s How It Is (When You’re In Love)” in 1967. The track reached number 34 on the US Billboard R&B chart. He later signed with Atlantic Records and recorded another hit, “She’s About A Mover” in 1968. In 1971, he signed with Hi Records, and a year later he successfully released his “Try to Live My Life Without You”. Clay launched his own label “Echo Records” in the mid-1970s and released singles such as “Messing With My Mind” and “A Nickel And A Nail”. In 2007, he went on to release the Grammy nominated gospel CD ‘Walk A Mile in My Shoes’. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2013. He is chairman of the non-profit company Tobacco Road Incorporated.
