Puri is a graduate of the Indian Film and Television Institute and the National Academy of Drama. He made his film debut in 1975 with Chor Chor Chhupja. Puri won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Aakrosh in 1981. He won the National Film Awards for Best Actor in 1982 for Arohan and in 1984 for Ardh Satya. He also won the Best Actor Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 1984 for Ardh Satya. In 1990, he was awarded India’s fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri Award. In 1998, he won the Best Actor Award at the Brussels International Film Festival and the Special Award at the American Grand Prix at the Montreal World Film Festival for his outstanding contribution to the art of cinema. He was awarded the British Empire Medal of Honor in 2004 and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Film in 2009. Om married Nandita Puri in 1993 and have a son together.
