Notorious BIG aka Biggie Smalls is an American rapper and hip-hop artist. He was born Christopher George Lator Wallace on May 21, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York. His mother “Voletta” was a preschool teacher and his father “Selwyn” was a welder. Biggie started dealing in drugs when she was twelve years old. He dropped out of George Westinghouse Career Technical Education High School at the age of seventeen. Before his musical career, he spent nine months in a North Carolina prison.

Biggie started rapping as a teenager. With the help of DJ Cee, his demo tape caught the attention of record producer Sean Combs. He signed with Bad Boy Records in 1992. Biggie’s first single as a solo artist, “Party and Bullshit”, was released in 1993. His debut studio album Ready to Die was released on September 13, 1994. The album was a commercial success and was certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA. The posthumous studio albums Life After Death and Born Again were released in 1997 and 1999, respectively.
The East Coast rapper has been dubbed one of the greatest rappers of all time. His contributions to the music industry have earned him multiple awards and nominations. He has won two Billboard Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and a Soul Train Music Award. The album “Live After Death” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album in 1998.
Biggie Smalls was shot and killed on March 9, 1997, at the age of 24. His funeral was held at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in Manhattan. His body was cremated. Biggie’s death comes six months after his West Coast rival Tupac Shakur was shot in a similar fashion.
