He was born Noel Lee on December 25, 1948 in San Francisco, California, and holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly State University. After graduation, he began working on laser fusion at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Musically gifted, Lee decided to quit his engineering job in 1972 to play drums for a country rock band. After the band disbanded a few years later, he went on to perform solo for six months before taking an engineering job at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. At his job, being Lee’s audiophile meant inventing his own speaker cable in his garage. Therefore, he established Monster Cable Products in 1979 to manufacture his products. Although Lee’s audio cables were not accepted at first, their better performance and good quality earned them a place in the market. Today, Noel Lee is credited with building the Monster business and shaping today’s audio components market.
