Nikki Haley is an American politician and member of the Republican Party. She is the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She is the 116th Governor of South Carolina and a former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Hayley was born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa on January 20, 1972 in Bamberg, South Carolina. Her parents, Raj and Ajit Randhawa, were Sikh immigrants from India. She has three siblings, Mitty, Charan and Simran. Haley attended Orangeburg Preparatory School in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She graduated from Clemson University in 1994 with a BA in Accounting.
Profession
Before entering politics, Hayley worked for FCR Corporation, a waste recycling company. After college, she worked as chief financial officer at her mother’s clothing company, Exotica International. Exotica operated from 1976 to 2008, generating more than $1 million in annual revenue.
In 1998, Haley joined the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors. She was appointed to the board of directors of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce in 2003. She became president of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) in 2004. Haley challenged incumbent Republican Larry Kun for the South Carolina House seat in 2004. She won the election and was sworn in on January 11, 2005. During her tenure, Haley pushed anti-tax laws, voted against pro-abortion bills, and supported stricter immigration laws. She was re-elected in 2006 and again in 2008.
Haley was elected as the 116th Governor of South Carolina in 2010. She was endorsed by Mitt Romney, Jenny Sanford and Sarah Palin. Haley was sworn in on January 12, 2011. She became the first Indian-American woman in South Carolina to hold the position. She was re-elected for the second term in 2014. Haley delivered the GOP’s response to Barack Obama’s final State of the Union address in January 2016. She supported fellow Republicans Marco Rubio and later Ted Cruz during the 2016 presidential election. Haley is the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President Donald Trump.
