Nicole Maines is an American actress and transgender activist. She made history and became the first transgender superhero in a TV series. Her screen works include the Supergirl and Royal Pains series, and the documentary The Trans List (2016). She is Amy Ellis Nutt’s book and became the subject of Becoming Nicole (2015). Nicole was born in Gloversville, New York on October 7, 1997, and was originally named Wyatt Benjamin Maines. Her adoptive parents are Wayne and Kelly. She has an identical twin brother named Jonas. Before the 5th grade, Wyatt’s name was changed to Nicole Amber Maines. She attended Orono Middle School and Wayne Fleet Middle School. She later studied at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania.

Maine made its TV show debut in the 2015 TV series “Royal Pain.” She was chosen as “Anna”. Her next screen appearance is the HBO TV documentary, The Trans List (2016). The film is directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders. It features Caroline Cossey, Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox etc. Maine plays the superhero “Nia Nal / Dreamer” in the fourth season of the CW series “Supergirl.” The announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2018. Supergirl was developed by Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg. It is based on the roles of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The main actors include Melissa Benoist and Mehcad Brooks. The 4th season of Supergirl will premiere in October 2018. Maines appeared in the documentary Not Your Skin (2017). She plays “Laurel” in the upcoming horror comedy film Bit (2018).

Nicole and her father Wayne Maines are the subject of the book “Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of the American Family” (2015). This book was written by Pulitzer Prize winner Amy Ellis Nutt and published by Random House. “Becoming Nicole” detailed the family’s experience and acceptance of transgender children. It also discusses and advocates transgender equality.

Nicole Maines currently lives in Portland, Maine. In the summer of 2015, she underwent sex reassignment surgery. Before that, she took puberty inhibitors and female hormones. In June 2013, in the Doe v. Clenchy case, Maine was taken to the Maine Supreme Court of Justice. Her name was listed as “Susan Doe” in the court case. She won the right to use the high school girls’ toilet and received $75,000 in compensation. The state court ruled that denying transgender students who fit their gender identity into the bathroom is illegal.
