Nicky Hayden is an American professional motorcycle racer and former MotoGP world champion. He has spent most of his career in Honda and Ducati racing cars. His achievements include the 2002 AMA Superbike Championship and 2006 Cycling News Rider of the Year. Hayden was born Nicholas Patrick Hayden on July 30, 1981 in Owensboro, Kentucky. His parents are Earle and Rose. He has four siblings, Tommy, Roger Lee, Jenny and Catherine.
Profession
Hayden began his road racing career at the Central Motorcycle Road Race Association (CMRA). Prior to this, he had competed on the dirt track of the Paducah International Circuit. His first notable honor was the 1997 AMA Dirt Track Horizon Award. Hayden was crowned the 1999 AMA 600 Supersport Champion. He was also named the 1999 AMA Professional Athlete of the Year. Hayden drove a Honda superbike to compete in the 2002 Tona 200 race and won the championship. His victory made history and became the youngest AMA superbike champion ever.
Hayden made his MotoGP debut at Honda in 2003. He won the 5th place and was named the MotoGP Rookie of the Year. In the 2005 season, Hayden won his first Grand Prix victory at Laguna Seca. He progressed to third place, second only to Marco Melandri and Valentino Rossi. Hayden won his first and only MotoGP world championship in 2006. Then he spent 5 seasons with Ducati from 2009 to 2013. Hayden returned to Honda in 2014. He was named a MotoGP legend in 2015. He finished fifth in the 2016 Superbike World Championship.

Nicky Hayden passed away on May 22, 2017, at the age of 35. According to Maurizio Bufalini Hospital, his death was caused by multiple serious injuries. On May 17, 2017, Hayden was knocked down by a car while riding a bicycle in Rimini, Italy. He suffered traumatic brain injury and died 5 days later. Hayden’s fiancée, Jackie Marin, survived.
