Net Worth in India: La India is a Puerto Rican salsa and house music singer who has a net worth of $4 million. Linda Viera Caballero (aka “La India” aka “India”) was born on March 9, 1969 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. She is also known as “La Princesa de la Salsa” (Princess Salsa).
Indian parents moved to New York City shortly after her birth and settled in the South Bronx in the same house as her grandmother, who had a major influence on life in India. Her stage name India was actually given to her by her grandmother because her granddaughter had dark features and long, straight hair. At 14, India was one of the founding members of the Latin freestyle group TKA. Shortly after the release of their first single, Come Get My Love, India left the band to sign a separate contract with Reprise/Warner Bros. Records, who planned to market her as the Latin “Madonna”. Shortly after the release of her first Reprise album Breaking Night, India decided not to take part in her career. In 1992, Eddie Palmieri produced Caballero’s first Spanish salsa album, Llego la India, which was hailed as one of the best salsa albums of the year. Since then, Caballero has been known as “Indian” and she is now a hot commodity. India was nominated for the Lo Nuestro Award for Best Female Performer Tropical/Salsa in 1993. In 1994, India recorded the house music single “Love and Happiness” (Yemaya y Ochún) with Louie Vega, a tribute to Santería, a fusion religion based on the Caribbean. This cheerful family track is played in abundance in international dance clubs. During this period, India’s relationship with Santería has drawn a lot of criticism. She later recorded Dicen Que Soy (They Said I Am), a 2-time Gold Certified Billboard hit, which included a duet with Marc Anthony on Vivir Lo Nuestro.
In the 2000s, she went on to receive more awards and hits. La India continues to record and perform today. In 2014, India re-signed with record label Top Stop Music, joining the Salsa Giants project with Sergio George.
