Mr. Bluhm owns and operates the Rivers Casino in Pennsylvania and Chicago and the Niagara Casino in New York. Born into a Jewish family in 1938, he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and then earned a law degree from Northwestern University.
Bluhm worked as an attorney and eventually a partner at the Chicago law firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt. By 1970, he had co-founded JMB Realty with a college roommate. They didn’t generate most of their profits until the real estate crash in the early 1990s. Although he started another private equity firm called Walton Street Capital in 1994, Bluhm still owns part of JMB Realty. The latter focuses primarily on managing and developing commercial real estate. In 1994, he founded the private equity firm Walton Street Capital. He currently serves on several corporate boards. He is also the president of Northbrook Corporation. Bluhm is known for hosting President Obama’s birthday parties, priced at $30,000 per plate. All funds raised go to the Democratic National Committee. He also endorsed Democratic candidates including Hillary Clinton, Dick Durbin, Rahm Emanuel, Melissa Bean and Lou Lang. He is an art lover and has amassed over $100 million worth of art to date. He is a patron of the boards of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
