Initially, he served as executive chairman of telecommunications companies Wind Telecom and Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH) before embarking on a full-fledged political career in May 2011. He was born on June 15, 1954 in Naguib Onsi Sawiris and started his career. Joined Orascom, the largest private sector employer in the country, in 1979.
As the founder and builder of Orascom’s railway and IT and telecommunications divisions, Sawiris was also responsible for OTH after the group was split into separate companies. In early 2005, he established Weather Investment, which was later renamed WIND Telecom. Five years later, he merged his phone assets with VimpelCom Ltd., Russia’s second-largest mobile phone operator, in a deal worth about $6.5 billion. A politician, he founded the Free Egyptians Party after the 2011 Egyptian uprising against President Hosni Mubarak.
