Muhammad Ali is an American professional boxer, social activist and philanthropist. He has an impressive 56-5 record. Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. His father Cassius the Elder was a painter and his mother Odessa was a maid. He has five siblings. Ali grew up in the South, where he experienced racial prejudice first-hand. He attended Central High School in Louisville.

Ali has been honing his boxing skills since he was 12 years old. His first trainer was police officer and boxing coach Joe Martin. Ali made his amateur debut in 1954. He won two national Gold Glove championships and an Amateur Track and Field National Championship. He competed in the 1960 Summer Olympics and won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division.
Ali made his professional debut in October 1960, beating opponent Tunney Hunsaker. He defeated Sonny Liston in the 1964 bout to become the world heavyweight champion. Ali is 6-foot-3 and has 78-inch tentacles. He is known for his great footwork and in-ring speed. His nicknames were “The Greatest,” “The People’s Champion,” and “The Lips of Louisville.” He also popularized the slogan “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”.
Ali was arrested in 1967 for refusing to serve in the United States Armed Forces. He was sentenced to five years in prison and his boxing license was suspended for three years. Ali returned to the ring in 1970. He recaptured the world heavyweight title after defeating Joe Frazier in 1974. Ali retired from boxing in 1981. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2005. His star was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002.
