Monty Williams is an American basketball coach and retired NBA player. He was born Tavares Montgomery Williams, Jr. on October 8, 1971 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He attended Potomac High School in Maryland and then the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. He played small forward for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team. He averaged 22.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game as a senior.

Williams was selected by the New York Knicks with the 24th overall pick in the 1994 NBA draft. He played nine seasons in the NBA for five different teams. He was forced to retire after the 2002-2003 Philadelphia 76ers due to chronic knee problems. Williams made his assistant coaching debut with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2005. He was the head coach of the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans from 2010-2015. In June 2015, he became the associate head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
