Mo Farah is a Somali-born British distance runner and Olympic gold medalist. He was born Mohamed Muktar Jama Farah on 23 March 1983 in Mogadishu, Somalia. His twin brother “Hassan” is a telecommunications engineer. Farah moved to the UK at the age of 8. He was educated at Isleworth and Sion Schools, followed by Feltham Community College. He trained for ten years at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham.
Profession
Farah initially wanted to be a football player for his favourite club, Arsenal FC. However, due to his speed and stamina on the track, he was encouraged to pursue track and field. Farah competed in the youth division from 1996 to 2005. He won first place in the 5000m at the 2001 European Junior Championships in Athletics.
Farah made his senior team debut in 2005 and won his first gold medal at the 2006 European Cross Country Championships in Italy. He won five gold medals at the European Championships and five at the World Championships. Farah made his Olympic debut at the 2012 London Olympics. He competed in the 5000m and 10000m events and won gold medals. Farah won his third Olympic gold medal in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
Farah has won numerous awards including the British Athletics Writers Guild Award five times. He was named European Athlete of the Year again in 2011 and 2012. His book Double Ambitions: My Autobiography was published in October 2013.
