Mitt Romney is an American businessman, politician and former governor of Massachusetts. He served as the Republican nominee during the 2012 presidential election. Willard Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. His father, George, was the 43rd governor of Michigan, and his mother, Lenore, was an actor and politician. He has three siblings, Scott, Jane and Margot Lynn. Romney grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and attended Cranbrook School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1971. Romney completed his MBA and Juris Doctorate at Harvard University in 1975. He was sworn in to the Michigan State Bar in 1976.

Romney began his business career in the mid-1970s. Starting in 1977, he worked for several years at the management consulting firm “Bain & Company”. His top job at the company is CEO. Romney co-founded the private investment firm Bain Capital in 1984. As of 2014, the company’s total assets exceeded $75 billion. Romney served as constituency bishop for The Church of Latter-day Saints (1981-86) and later as stake president (1986-94).
In 1994, Romney ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. He was defeated by long-serving Democrat Ted Kennedy. Romney briefly served as chairman of the Salt Lake City organizing committee during the 2002 Winter Olympics. His success led to him being elected as the 70th Governor of Massachusetts. Romney held that position from January 2003 to January 2007. During his tenure, he enacted health care reform legislation that provided near-universal health insurance to Massachusetts residents.
Romney ran for president in 2008 but lost the Republican nomination to Senator John McCain. He won the Republican primary in 2012 but lost the general election to incumbent President Barack Obama. His vice presidential running mate is Paul Ryan. Romney has been designated as a candidate for Secretary of State under US President Donald Trump. The two meet at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey on November 19, 2016.
