Mitchell Stevens Williams was born in Santa Ana, California in 1964. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 1982 after graduating from high school in West Lynn, Oregon. The Texas Rangers acquired him in 1985 and made his major league debut for the team the following year. The Rangers traded him to the Cubs for the 1988 season. The Cubs traded Williams to the Phillies in 1991, and he won 12 games that year. A southpaw, he was very effective as a pitcher, but most regrettably gave up the home run of the Toronto Blue Jays’ Joe Carter, which led to Toronto’s 1993 World Championship win over the Phillies. The World Series loss was the end of Williams’ time with the Phillies, which traded him to the Houston Astros, despite making the most saves from his left-hander of his career with the Phillies.
