Early life and career
Mike Will Made It was born in Marietta, Georgia in 1989 as Michael Len Williams II. He is the youngest of three children of former gospel singer Shirley and former IBM executive and club DJ Michael Sr. Will had a highly athletic childhood, playing football, basketball and baseball. Despite his dreams of becoming a professional athlete, his passion for hip-hop took hold early on. At 14, Will started creating his own beats on the Korg ES1 metronome his father gave him for Christmas. Eventually, he started using production equipment such as Korg Triton, Yamaha Motif and Roland Fantom. By the age of 16, Weir was working in a studio in Atlanta, trying to auction off his festivals to well-known artists. Although initially overlooked, he soon caught the attention of rapper and record executive Gucci Mane, who invited him to PatchWerk Recording Studios.
After high school, Will went to Georgia State University at the urging of his parents. Largely uninterested in this formal education, he eventually took a hiatus, during which time he produced his first hit, “Tupac Back.” When the song was a success on the Billboard charts, Will dropped out of school to focus on his music career.
Professional Music Breakthrough
After an initial introduction, Will and Gucci Mane began releasing songs together in 2011. Will went on to collaborate with other well-known rappers such as Future, Rocko and 2 Chainz. With Future, he wrote several popular songs such as “Itchin”, “Ain’t No Way Around It”, “Truth Gonna Hurt You” and “Turn on the Lights”, the latter of which reached No. 2 on the chart Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In late 2011, Weir released his first mixtape, titled “Est. in 1989 (Last of a Dying Breed)”. It contains a mix of songs from Will’s catalog, and also includes artists such as Gucci Mane, Lil Boosie, Lil Wayne, and Waka Flocka Flame.
In 2012, Will announced his second mixtape “Est. in 1989 Pt. 2” with the music site The Fader, and released the lead single “Back 2 the Basics”. The mixtape features collaborations with artists including Diddy, Juicy J, Mac Miller, and French Montana. Also in 2012, Will produced “No Lie”, the lead single from 2 Chainz’s debut album “Based on a TRU Story”. The song reached #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA. Will had several other big hits that same year. These include Juicy J’s “Bandz a Make Her Dance,” starring Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz, and Kanye West’s “Mercy,” starring Big Sean, 2 Chainz, and Pusha T. The latter track reached #1 on the Hot R&B/ Hip Hop Songs chart and #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. In late 2012, Weir released his third mixtape “Est. in 1989 2.5”.

Weir had another big year in 2013, when he executive produced Miley Cyrus’ fourth studio album, “Bangerz.” He also produced eight tracks on the album, including the lead single “We Can’t Stop”. Later in 2013, Will released his single “23”, which featured Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J. That year, he also signed with Interscope Records to record his debut studio album.
In the summer of 2014, Will released “Ransom”, the first single from his upcoming mixtape; titled “Buy the World”, it stars Kendrick Lamar, Future and Lil Wayne. A few years later, Will released his first studio album, Ransom 2. The main characters who contributed to the album include Rihanna, Pharrell, Migos, Big Sean and YG. In 2020, Will released the single “Bang Bang” with rapper Chief Keef. He also released the lead single “What That Speed Bout!?” from his upcoming album Michael.
Drummer Records and Other Items
Weir started his own production company in 2006 called EarDrummers Entertainment. Seven years later, he founded Ear Drummer Records, which he signed to Interscope Records. Through the label, Will produced 2018’s “Edgewood,” rapper Trouble’s debut album. That year, he also worked on Creed II: The Album, one of two official soundtrack albums for the sports drama film. The album’s first single, “Kill ‘Em with Success”, featured 2 Chainz, Schoolboy and Eearz. Other artists on the Ear Drummer label include Shotta Spence, Two-9, Rae Sremmurd, Rico Pressley and Andréa. Meanwhile, in-house producers include 30 Roc, Marz, Resource, Scooly, Swae Lee and DJ Fu.
As producer and songwriter, Will has written such hits as Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” and “Formation”; Ciara’s “Body Party”; Rihanna’s “Pour it Up”; Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” ”; and “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar. For the latter, where he both produces and writes, Weir won a Grammy for Best Rap Song in 2018.
