Mike Leach was born in Susanville, California in 1961 and attended Brigham Young University, although he did not play for the football team. He earned a degree in American Studies before going on to earn a law degree from Pepperdine University.
Leach began his football coaching career in 1987 as an assistant at Caltech. He was an assistant at COD before becoming the head coach of the Poli Bears. In 1989, Leach accepted a job as Iowa Wesleyan’s offensive coordinator until 1992 when he held the same position at Valdosta State University. Leach served as Kentucky’s offensive coordinator from 1997 to 1998 before spending one season at Oklahoma. In 2000, Texas Tech hired Leach as their head coach, the first head coaching job of Leach’s career. He led the Red Raiders until 2009. After a three-year coaching hiatus, Leach was hired as Washington State’s head coach, where he remained until 2014. Midway through the 2014 season, Leach amassed a 96-67 career win-loss record along with a .500 record in bowl games. He won the Big 12 South Championship in 2008. Leach received the Big 12 Coach of the Year, the Woody Hayes Trophy and the George Munger Award. Leach has four children.
