After a successful career that culminated in the 1980s, Platini became one of the leading figures in football’s governing bodies, most notably FIFA and UEFA. As a player, Michel represented clubs such as Nancy, Saint-Etienne and Juventus. He has also represented his native France at multiple World Cups. Michel François Platini was born on June 21, 1955 in Jove, France. Growing up in the Lorraine region by Italian parents, Michele started playing football at a very young age. His father was a former professional footballer who became a director of French club AS Nancy. At 16, Platini failed several trials with major French teams, leaving him with no choice but to start his career at his father’s club AS Nancy.

Although Platini started in Nancy’s reserves, he eventually won a place in the first team. In his first game, he spent most of his time on the bench, letting unruly fans throw things at him. These fans also spat at him. Ultimately, Platini became an indispensable player for Nancy, a free-kick specialist. During this time, he represented France at the World Cup for the first time, ultimately disappointing supporters of the national team. In 1979, he signed a three-year contract with Saint-Etienne. He would spend the next three years there, with underwhelming results.
In 1982, he renewed his contract with Juventus. It turned out to be more productive, as the old lady won the Serie A titles in 1984 and 1986 with the help of Platini. He eventually retired in 1987. After a rather unremarkable stint as manager of the French national team, Platini turned the focus of his post-match career to football management. By 1998, he was chairman of the 1998 World Cup Organizing Committee with Fernand Sastre. Before that, he served on UEFA’s Technical Development Committee. He then served on the UEFA Executive Committee and the FIFA Executive Committee. Over the years, he gradually became more influential in both organisations, eventually becoming chairman of FIFA’s Technical and Development Committee. During this period, Platini also became vice-president of the French Football Federation.
The same year he became chairman of FIFA’s technology and development committee, Platini also announced his intention to run for UEFA president. He won elections and supported multiple policies. These include caps on wages and restrictions on foreign ownership of clubs. Sepp Blatter was forced to resign as FIFA president in 2015 amid a shocking and wide-ranging corruption scandal. Platini immediately announced his intention to replace Blatter. However, he eventually withdrew from the competition in 2016, claiming “the timing was bad”.
