Michelle Obama is an American lawyer, author and the first African-American First Lady of the United States. She is the wife of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. She was born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. Her mother, Marian, was a secretary, and her late father, Fraser Robinson, was a worker at the city’s waterworks. She has an older brother, Craig, who is a basketball coach. Michelle grew up in a bungalow on Chicago’s South Shore. She attends Whitney M. Young High School for Gifted Children. There, she served as student union treasurer and graduated in 1981 as a class salutator. Michelle received her BA in Sociology from Princeton University in 1985. She completed her Juris Doctorate at Harvard Law School in 1988.

Michelle was an associate at the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin from 1988 to 1991. She transitioned from law to public service in 1991. Michelle initially served as Assistant Commissioner for Chicago City Hall Planning and Development. In 1993, she was named executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies. The program is designed to train and prepare youth for job opportunities in public service. Michelle was the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago from 1996 to 2005. She also serves as Vice President of Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Michelle supported and ran for her husband during his campaign for President of the United States. She gave memorable speeches at the Democracy Convention in 2008 and 2012. Barack Obama won the oath on January 20, 2008 and took the oath on January 20, 2009. He was re-elected for the second semester in 2012. Michelle also got first lady Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign. Hillary lost the race to Republican candidate Donald Trump.
As first lady, Michelle continued to work in public service. She tackled a range of social problems, from poverty to lack of higher education.
