She served as president (2006-2010), becoming the country’s first woman to serve as president. In December 2013, Bachelet was re-elected as President of Chile with over 62% of the vote. She is the first person since 1932 to win her country’s presidency twice. In addition to her native Spanish, she speaks English, German, Portuguese and French. After a turbulent childhood and even exile (her father and her family were tortured by the government of former Latin American President Salvador Allende on treason charges), the Bachelet family eventually returned to Chile. After Chile’s democratic transition in 1990, Bachelet worked at the Santiago West Health Department of the Ministry of Health and as a consultant to the Pan American Health Organization, the World Health Organization and the German company for technical cooperation. In March 2000, Bachelet (almost unknown at the time) was appointed Minister of Health by President Ricardo Lagos. In January 2002, she was named Defense Minister, becoming the first woman to serve in a Latin American country and one of the few in the world. In late 2004, Bachelet was established as the only CPD figure likely to defeat Joaquín LaVine, and she was asked to become the Socialist Party’s presidential candidate. Bachelet was sworn in as President of the Republic of Chile on March 11, 2006.
