His grandfather George created the first studio makeup department, while his father Monte worked on Gone with the Wind and his Uncle Bud co-created Creatures from Black Lake. Michael is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara. He became a makeup artist at Universal Studios in 1961, and three years later became assistant head of makeup. During the 1970s and 1980s he worked as a freelance makeup artist. He designed the prosthetic nose for Robert De Niro in Raging Bull. Westmore worked for the CIA, creating makeup sets for overseas agents to change identities. He has been working with Star Trek since 1986 and developing cosmetics for alien races such as Ferengi, Cardassians and Jem’Hadar. He also helped create the makeup for the character data. In 1985, Westmore won an Oscar for the film “The Mask.” From 1984 to 2005, he was nominated for at least one Emmy each year. Westmore has also published three books.
