Michael Phelps is an American swimmer who holds the record for 26 Olympic medals. He has 22 Olympic gold medals, 8 of which were won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Michael Fred Phelps II was born on June 30, 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents, Fred and Debbie, divorced in 1994 when he was nine years old. He has two sisters, Whitney and Hillary. Phelps grew up in Rogers Forge, where he attended Dumbarton Middle School, followed by Towson High School. He went on to study sports marketing and management at the University of Michigan.

Phelps started swimming with his sisters when he was seven. His first formal training was at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club with coach Bob Bowman. Phelps’ prowess in the water earned him a spot on the U.S. National B team in 1999. He competed in his first Olympics in 2000, when he was 15 years old. He set a world record in the 200-meter butterfly in the 2001 World Aquatics Championships. Phelps won three gold medals in the 200m, 400m and 4×100 medley at the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships. He won 4 golds and 2 silvers at the 2003 World Championships.
Phelps is the most awarded Olympian in Olympic history. He won an impressive 6 gold medals at Athens 2004, 8 at Beijing 2008 and 4 at London 2012. Competitive swimmer Mark Spitz is the previous Olympic single record holder with seven. Phelps briefly retired after the 2012 London Olympics, but retired in April 2014. His appearance in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 marked his fifth Olympic appearance, the most of any male U.S. swimmer.
Phelps received several honors, including the Golden Goggles and the Sullivan Award. He was named Sports Illustrated Athlete of the Year in 2008 and FINA Swimmer of the Year in 2010. Phelps has won multiple World Swimmer of the Year and U.S. Swimmer of the Year awards. He is also the author of two books, Under the Surface: My Story (2008) and No Limits: The Will to Succeed (2009).
