Michael Flynn is a retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Army. He also served as the 18th Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and the 25th National Security Advisor. Michael Thomas Flynn was born in Middletown, Rhode Island in December 1958. His father, Charles, was a banker and his mother, Helen, worked in the real estate industry. He has several siblings, including a brother named Charlie. Flynn attended Middletown High School in his hometown. He received his Bachelor of Science in Management from the University of Rhode Island in 1981. His graduate degrees include an MBA in Telecommunications from Golden Gate University and an MS in National Security from the Naval War College.

In 1981, Flynn was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Military Intelligence. His early assignment was as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1983, Flynn was deployed as a platoon leader in Grenada. In 1994, he was in Haiti as head of the “Operation Democracy” joint war program. Flynn served as commander of the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade from 2002 to 2004. He also served as Director of Intelligence for Joint Special Operations Command (2004-07), US Central Command (2007-08), Joint Staff (2008-09), and International Security Assistance Force (2009-10).

Flynn was promoted to lieutenant general in September 2011. He was nominated by President Obama to serve as the 18th Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. He held this position from July 2012 until his retirement in August 2014. After retiring, Flynn served as chairman and CEO of Flynn Intel Group. The company provides intelligence services and is located in Alexandria, Virginia. Flynn briefly served as President Donald Trump’s 25th national security adviser. He has held this position for 24 days commencing January 20, 2017. Flynn resigned on February 13, 2017, following controversial contacts with Russian officials. He was replaced by Lieutenant General HR McMaster.

Flynn received several military and service medals throughout his career. These include the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Medal of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He co-authored, with Michael Ledeen, Battlefield: How We Won the Global War Against Radical Islam and Its Allies (2016).
