Michael Che is an American stand-up comedian and writer. He co-hosted the Saturday Night Live sketch “Weekend Update.” In 2014, he was a reporter for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Michael Che Campbell was born on May 19, 1983 in Manhattan, New York. He was named after the Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara. His parents are Ross and Nathaniel Campbell. He has 6 older siblings including Lee, Laverna, Willie and Kofi. Che grew up on projects on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He is a graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts.

After high school, Che designed and sold T-shirts and paintings on the streets of New York. He briefly worked as a designer for Tommy Hilfiger. Che started his stand-up comedy career at the age of 26 in 2009. He made his debut on “The Late Show” with David Letterman in 2012. He won New York’s Funniest Standup at the 2012 New York Comedy Festival. He was also named one of the funniest comics of 2013 by Rolling Stone and Variety.

From 2013 to 2014, Che was a contributor to NBC’s Saturday Night Live. From June to September 2014, he was a reporter for The Daily Show for 3 months. During his tenure, he appeared on “Race/Off: Live From Somewhere”. Che replaced actress Cecily Strong in SNL’s Weekend Update in September 2014. He co-hosts Sketch opposite Colin Jost. He is the first African American to chair the program since its inception. He joined the main cast of the weekend update in season three. He also performed late-night stand-up comedy with Seth Meyers. Car appeared in the comedy film Top 5 (2014) starring Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson. His credits include China Jigsaw (2013), Lyle (2014) and the comedy series Detroit. He was also VH1’s Best Weekly Actor ever. Che’s first comedy special was Comedy Central’s 2014’s “The Half Hour.” His one-hour stand-up special “Michael Che Matters” premiered on Netflix in November 2016.
