Melissa Benoist is an American actress and star of the CBS/CW series Supergirl. Her performance credits include Whiplash (2014), The Longest Ride (2015) and the Fox series Glee. Benoist was born on October 4, 1988, to parents Jim and Julie in Littleton, Colorado. She has two sisters, Christina and Jessica. Benoist attended Arapahoe High School, followed by Marymount Manhattan College in New York. She graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Benoist made his professional stage debut in the 2000 musical The Sound of Music. She played “Rosalind” in Shakespeare’s “As You Wish” (2009) and “Millie Dearmont” in the musical “Modern Millie” (2009). Benoist has performed at venues including the Littleton Town Hall Arts Centre and the Village Dinner Theatre. Her stage credits include Bye Bye Birdie, A Chorus Line and Footloose.
Benoist landed her first screen role as “The Laurel” in the 2008 drama “Tennessee.” The film was directed by Aaron Woodley and starred pop singer Mariah Carey. In 2012, Benoist auditioned for the Fox comedy series Glee and starred in “Marley Rose.” She played the role from 2012 to 2014 for 35 episodes. Benoist returned to film in 2014 with a supporting role in the TV series Whipping. She later starred in Danny Collins (2015) with Al Pacino, The Longest Ride (2015) with Scott Eastwood and Patriots Day with Mark Wahlberg ( 2016). Benoist is currently playing “Kara Danvers” aka “Supergirl” on the TV series Supergirl. The show premiered on CBS, but moved to The CW for its second season. Benoist won the Breakthrough Performance Award at the 42nd Saturn Awards in 2016.
