Mel Fisher Net Worth: Mel Fisher is an American treasure hunter with a net worth of $100 million. Mel Fisher was born in Indiana in August 1922 and died in December 1998. He is best known for discovering in 1622 the wreck of the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which he discovered in July 1985.

“Atocha Motherlode” is worth about $450 million and includes 40 tons of silver and gold. The find includes more than 100,000 Spanish “eight” silver coins, gold coins, Colombian emeralds, artifacts and 1,000 silver ingots. His company, Salvors Inc., also found several wrecks in Florida, including the slave ship Henrietta Marie and Atocha’s sister ship, the Santa Margarita. Mel attended Purdue University and opened the first dive shop in California. He hired Duncan Mathewson as chief archaeologist for the Atocha discovery. His ownership of the recovered treasure was confirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court, provided that 20 percent of the artifacts were donated to the state. Mel is married to Dolores Houghton, who has his business partner, and the couple have five children. Dolores set a female record for staying underwater for 50 hours. Mel Fisher died on December 19, 1998 at the age of 76.
