McKayla Maroney is a retired American rhythmic gymnast and Olympic gold medalist. She won gold medals in the vault at the 2011 and 2013 World Championships. She is also an aspiring TV actress. Maroney was born to athletic parents Erin and Mike on December 9, 1995 in Long Beach, California. She has a brother Kav and a sister Tarynn. Maroney is homeschooled. She has tried a variety of sports, including gymnastics, football, ice skating and tennis.

Maroney was energetic and lively as a child. This high level of energy prompted her parents to enroll her in gymnastics classes. She excelled, and by the age of 9, she started training more intensely in her new gym. Maroney drew early inspiration from the Disney movie Tarzan and fellow athlete Carly Patterson. After watching Patterson’s floor routine, she decided to go to the Olympics. Maroney’s first major tournament was the 2009 Visa Championship in Dallas, Texas. There, she placed third in the vault final. She was 13 at the time. Maroney finished 7th in the all-around competition at the 2010 CoverGirl Classic in Chicago, IL. She dominated the vault at the 2010 Visa Championships and later the Pan American Championships.

Maroney made his professional debut at the 2011 Jesolo City Cup in Jesolo, Italy. She won the gold medal in the all-around competition. She won the title of World Vaulting Champion at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. She won gold again at the 2013 competition in Antwerp, Belgium. Maroney’s Olympic debut was at the 2012 London Olympics. She won a silver medal in the vault final. She also won an Olympic gold medal as part of the “Big Five.” Other gymnasts are Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber. Maroney won a total of 3 gold medals at the National Championships and 2 at the US Classic. She quit gymnastics in 2016 for health reasons.

Maroney made her debut on the CW television series Dixie’s Hart. From 2012 to 2015, she frequently played the role of “Tonya”. She made a cameo appearance as “Ellie” on the 2013 Fox episode of Bones. She later appeared on the NBC single-camera sitcom “Supermarket.”
