early life
Maynard James Keenan was born in Ravenna, Ohio, in 1964, the only child of Judith and Michael of the Southern Baptists. He is of Italian and Irish descent. A few years later, Keenan’s parents divorced, his father moved to Scottville, Michigan, and his mother remarried. When Keenan was 11, his mother suffered from paralytic bleeding. She later encouraged him to move to Scottville to live with his father. There, Keenan went to Mason County Central High School, where he was part of the wrestling team. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, initially as a front-line observer and later at West Point Preparatory School. After completing the course, he turned down an appointment to West Point in favor of a career in music.
After prep, Keenan went to Kendall College of Art and Design to study art. He then moved to Somerville, Massachusetts, to do interior design for a pet store. He was then transferred to Los Angeles, where he started set production. As a musician, Keenan plays bass guitar for the band TexA.NS and sings for the band Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty. Between 1990 and 1993 he performed and recorded with the comedy rock band Green Jellö.
Shortly after moving to Los Angeles, Maynard met Adam Jones. According to legend, soon-to-be Rage Against the Machine Tom Morello heard Maynard scream at a house party. Morello suggested that he give up trying to be an artist and instead become a musician. With this in mind, Adam urged Maynard to form a band in 1990.
They eventually added drummer Danny Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor (replacing Phil D’Amour).
In 1991, Tool signed with Zoo Entertainment. The following year, they released their first EP, “The Opium.” Shortly thereafter, the group toured with Rage Against the Machine.
The band’s debut album, Undertow, was released in 1993; just eight months later, it was certified gold and eventually multi-platinum. Tool’s music video, “Prison Sex,” caused controversy, which was pulled from MTV for its graphic nature.
Tool’s second album, Ænima, came out in 1996 and was certified gold within ten weeks and eventually multi-platinum, reaching number one in New Zealand and number two in the United States. A member of an Italian winemaking family, Keenan opened his own winery and wine cellar in an unincorporated area southwest of Sedona, Arizona, where he lives.
