Maurice White is an American singer, songwriter, drummer and music producer. He is a seven-time Grammy Award winner and founder of the band “Earth, Wind & Fire”. He was born on December 19, 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee. He moved to Chicago as a teenager and studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. In the early 1960s he was a drummer at Chess Records. He joined the “Ramsey Lewis Trio” in 1966 and formed his own band “Salt Chili” in 1969.

White moved to Los Angeles and renamed his band “Earth, Wind & Fire”. Their self-titled debut studio album was released by Warner Bros. in February 1971. His brother “Verdine White” joined the band as bassist. The band is known for mixing R&B, soul, funk, jazz, disco, pop and rock. Their commercially successful fourth album, Head to the Sky, was released in May 1973 and sold over a million copies. White and his band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the 1980s and stopped touring in 1995.

Morris White died at his home in Los Angeles on February 3, 2016 at the age of 74. He died in his sleep, and the cause of his death was reported to be Parkinson’s disease. His net worth is $5 million. At least one of his children survived.
