Matt Barnes is a retired professional basketball player who last played for the Golden State Warriors. He was born on March 9, 1980 in Santa Clara, California. He attended Del Campo High School, where he played both football and basketball. Barnes continued his basketball career at UCLA. He played four seasons and in 2001 received an All-Pacific 10 Honorable Mention.
Profession
Barnes was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 46th overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft. He was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but was later waived. Then he played a year in the G League and then a year in the ABA. In 2004, Barnes signed and briefly played with the Los Angeles Clippers, followed by the Sacramento Kings. He signed with the Golden State Warriors in 2006, effectively boosting his offense and 3-point shooting. Barnes returned to the Clippers in 2012 and was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. He was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies prior to the 2015-2016 season. Barnes signed with the Sacramento Kings in July 2016. Seven months later, in February 2017, he was let go. He signed with the Golden State Warriors in March 2017.
Over the years, Barnes’ behavior on and off the field has resulted in several fines and suspensions. He has feuded with other NBA players including James Harden, Derek Fisher and John Henson.
