Mary Wilson is an American singer, actor, and writer originally from Greenville, Mississippi. She is one of the founders of “The Supremes” girl group and the longest active member. They released 29 studio albums, including Where Did Our Love Go (1964), The Supremes A’Go-Go (1966) and Diana Ross & the Supremes Join The Temptations (1968). She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
Wilson was born on March 6, 1944 in Greenville, Mississippi. She has two younger siblings: Roosevelt and Catherine. Wilson lived briefly in St. Louis and Chicago before moving to Detroit to live with her aunt and uncle. She was reunited with her mother when she was 9 years old. Wilson attended elementary school in Detroit, where she met the future band member Florence Ballard. She received a diploma from Northeast High School in Detroit (1962), and a few years later received an associate degree from New York University (2001).
Profession
In 1959, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, Diana Ross and Betty McGron formed the female group The Primettes. After signing with Motown Records in 1961, they changed their name to “The Supremes”. McGlown was replaced by Barbara Martin, who left the band soon. The Supremes’ first album Meet The Supremes was released in December 1962. They released the hit single “When the Lovelight Starts Shining through His Eyes” in 1963. This song appeared in their second album “Where Did Our Love Go” (1964). Supremes’ ninth album, The Supremes A’Go-Go, topped the Billboard 200 and top R&B/Hip-Hop album charts.
In 1967, Motown President Berry Gordy changed the group’s name to Diana Ross & The Supremes. In the same year, Florence Ballard left the group. She was replaced by Cindy Birdsong. With the new lineup, they received gold certification from Diana Ross and The Supremes Join The Temptations (1968). Diana Rose left the organization in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell. The Supremes released 11 albums in the 70s, including Right On (1970), Touch (1971) and High Energy (1976). Their 29th and final album Mary, Scherrie & Susaye was released in October 1976. The Supreme Band disbanded in 1977.
After a long career at The Supremes, Wilson began his solo career. Her first solo album of the same name was released by Motown Records in August 1979. It is supported by the songs “Red Hot”, “Midnight Dancer”, “Pick Up the Pieces” and “You are the Light That Guides My Way”. She was abandoned by Motown in 1980 and included in CEO Records in 1991. Her second solo album “Walk the Line” followed in 1992. The album features a cover version, originally “Ooh Child” by The Five Stairsteps. One day after the album was released, the CEO Records filed for bankruptcy protection.
In addition to music, Wilson is also a best-selling author, musical actor and frequent guest on TV shows. Her first book “Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme” was published in 1986. It details the career of The Supremes in the 1960s. Her second book “Supreme Faith: One Day We Will Be Together” published in 1990 covered the band’s musical journey in the 1970s. Her other publications include “Dreamgirl & Supreme Faith: My Life as a Supreme” and “Supreme Glamour” in collaboration with Mark Bego. Wilson’s theatrical works include “The Hive”, “Sylvia’s Funeral”, “Supreme Soul”, “Mother Hubbard” and “Street Dance”. Her film works include Tiger Town (1983), Jackie Chan (1999) and Golden Shoes (2015). She is a contestant for the 28th season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” (2019).
