Mary Lou Retton is a retired American gymnast and Olympian. She won gold, 2 bronze and 2 silver medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Layton is considered the first American female gymnast to win a gold medal in the Olympic all-around competition. She withdrew from the competition in 1986 and was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997. Layton was born on January 24, 1968 to the parents Ronnie and Louis in Fairmont, West Virginia. Her father works in the coal industry. Layton grew up in a Christian family. After watching Nadia Comaneci during the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada, Retton was inspired to become a gymnast. This led her to study gymnastics at West Virginia University. Her first mentor was coach Gary Rafaloski (Gary Rafaloski). In 1982, Layton met Romanian coach Bella Carroy in a game in Las Vegas. Later that same year, she moved to Houston, Texas, where she trained under his guidance. Layton participated in the America’s Cup and won gold medals in 1983 (New York), 1984 (New York) and 1985 (Indiana). At the American Nationals, she won silver medals in 1983 and 1984. She also won gold medals in the American Classics in 1983 and 1984. Layton made his Olympic debut at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. She has just recovered from a knee injury. Despite this, she won gold medals in all-around competitions, silver medals in vaulting and team competitions, and bronze medals in uneven bars and floor exercises.
Layton officially retired in 1986. She was inducted into the National Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997. Her career has inspired future athletes such as Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin, Gaby Douglas and Simone. After retiring, Retton appeared on TV shows such as ABC Funfit, Guiding Light, Baywatch and Mary Lou’s Flip Flop Shop. She co-hosted the “Road to Olympic Gold Medal” series. She also made guest appearances in the film Scrooged (1988) with Bill Murray and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994) with Leslie Nielsen. Retton and partner Sasha Farber will participate in the 27th season of ABC Dances with the Stars.
